Iowa is an interesting place to photograph and even after twenty years of working and living here I still experience it as a gem. I sometimes make images that tend to haunt me a little and make me question the metaphysical implications. This image with the striking white face of a black cow in a sea of green pasture on first inspection seems simple. But it evolved as something much more complex on a personal level after I made a big print of it. Please let me know what you think.

For the last two years I have been visiting the county seats in Iowa to photograph the courthouses built before 1930. The Fremont County Courthouse was decked out with flags on July 4th, 2004, and made for a patriotic image. The University of Iowa Press will be publishing a book from this documentary sometime in early 2008.
